The Best Utah County "Stay-cations"

'Staycations'

A Stay-ca-tion- is a vacation that is spent at home or around your local area involving trips to local attractions or activities in your own home!

Now that it’s almost summer time, it’s time for warmer weather, adventures, and vacations.  Are you in desperate need for a vacation but can’t afford it?  Utah county is full of amazing adventures that are exciting, fun, and affordable!  Here are some ideas you can do this summer to have the ultimate, Utah County “StayCation”.

Activities around Utah County:

  • Go On a Hike: Lucky for us, Utah County is full of beautiful areas that can be explored with a nice, relaxing hike.  This summer, make a bucket list and hike the “Y”, Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon, or the Grotto in Payson Canyon.
  • Orem Owlz Baseball Game: Is there anything better than sitting under the lights watching a baseball game?  The smell of fresh cut grass, the warm weather, and hot dog is the perfect getaway!
  • Go Bowling: What a fun and engaging activity for friends and family!  Bowling is cheap, and convenient, especially in Utah County.  There are so many bowling alleys to choose from!
  • Go See a Movie: A movie is a nice way to take your mind off the stresses of life and getaway for a while!  Now that summer is coming, there should be some “Must See Movies” in the next couple of months.
  • Swimming: Pool, lake, pond, river, where ever you go, you name it, swimming is fun!  Take your family or friends to a local pool and give swimming a try!
  • Golfing: Competitive? Go golfing! Utah County has a variety of courses to choose from! Golfing can also be a way to get away from stress, and if your not into golf, try mini golf!
  • Go To a Park: Just getting outside relieves stress!  Get some rays on that skin and take your family on a picnic in a park!
  • 7 Peaks: What a great place to take you and your family!  7 Peaks Water Park is full of fun water slides, pools, and relaxing hot tubs.  If you want to cool down, go to the 7 Peaks Ice Arena, just next-door,  and give ice staking a try!

Staying at home ideas

Some of the best adventures can be found in the walls of your own home!  Here are some ideas you could use to transform your home into a resort:

  • Spa: Turn your boring bathroom into a luxurious spa!  All you need is a couple candles, bath salts, and maybe add Spa music from YouTube to complete the relaxing atmosphere!
  • Hammock– Hang up a hammock in your yard and enjoy the fresh air and a nice, cool summer breeze!    Be careful though, once you have settled in a hammock, you may never want to get out!
  • Camping: Go camping in your backyard!  Turn off all electronic devices and just enjoy the company of your family in the comfort of your own backyard.  You’ll be up giggling and talking all night!
  • Home cooked meals: Treat Yo Self!  It’s a StayCation for a reason, so teat it like so!  Make your favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner all within the same day!
  • Host a board game night: Invite friends and family to play games!  With the combination of appetizers, a deck of cards, and a couple board games, a game night could be the perfect getaway!
  • Movie Night: Turn your living room into a movie theater!  Make popcorn, buy candy, and if you want, roll out the red carpet!  If your feeling adventurous, have a theme night and have your family and friends dress up like characters from the movie!

Remember, you Do Not need to break the bank or travel far to have a memorable vacation.  Utah County is full of fun and exciting activities for you and your family.  Even staying at home will bring joy and relaxation to your life!  So enjoy your “Staycation” and save time and money!

President’s Message February 2016

2016 marks the 60th anniversary of UCCU! In 1956 we began as BYU Credit Union on a stair landing in the Harold R. Clark building on Brigham Young University campus. Seven members compiled $35 in assets to invest in an innovative concept- a credit union. Built on the principles of a not-for-profit organization, credit unions focus on the concept of people helping people. Now, 60 years later we continue to focus on the same principles of helping people by inspiring smart decisions. As a member, you are the credit union. Below are some of the ways we will be celebrating with you this year.

Supporting Local Schools

Being a community credit union, we strongly believe in helping the members of our community and to celebrate we want to give back. We invite everyone in the community to transfer your existing loans to UCCU and in return we will give you a ½% cash back of the loan balance and we will donate the same amount to the Utah school of your choice! Our experienced loan officers can help you transfer your loan over quickly and easily. Visit uccu.com/60years for details.

Share Your Story

With 60 years of history, our members have some great stories about this cooperative organization working together to inspire smart decisions. The credit union is accepting written or video submissions about your experiences with UCCU and we’ll be giving away some amazing prizes: a Smart Car plus 60 the prizes including a trip to Disneyland, $600 in cash, iPad Pro, 60” TV, and much more. Visit uccu.com/60years for details.

Charity Donation with Your Help

We will be donating money to local charities that help support and improve our community. We will need your help in deciding who gets the money. More information will be coming soon at uccu.com/60Years.

Member Appreciation & Special 60th Year Celebration Loan Offers

There will be other giveaways and special loan offers throughout the year, more details to come!

Thank you for your membership and for allowing us to serve in the community for 60 years. We hope this year will be a wonderful one!

Home Equity Loans and our Mini Mortgages are often used for one-time expenses. You receive the funds in a lump sum (as opposed to a line of credit that is revolving). Also a great solution if you’re looking to pay off your home in the near future. UCCU has low fixed rates and excellent terms.  Mini Mortgages can range between 5-10 years for the 1st mortgage.  Home Equity Loan or a 2nd mortgage will be up to 10 years.  These fixed APR options are also as low as 3.24%-4.25%.

So even if you are you looking to repair or remodel your home, to pay for your child’s education, or need assistance to pay off high interest credit card debit, our home equity loans are a perfect way to help your upcoming financial projects.

So put your home to work and receive financial assistance from a home equity loan.  Applying for your home equity is simple and can be done in as little as 20 minutes. Complete the form online and we will create customized quotes based on your loan details.

Keep the Thrill of Summer Alive

Gallery  Comment

56294562

Every summer there comes a time when children run up to their parents and nag them for entertainment. The thrill of summer has lost its spark and now boredom is looming over their heads. As a parent, we never like to hear the words, “Mommy, Daddy, I’m bored.” To prepare for this even before it happens, here are some budget-friendly ideas on how to entertain your children so the word boredom doesn’t enter their vocabulary.

The Open Waters of the Library

The Library is a never ending sea of stories, excitement, entertainment. Not only will it give your children something to do, but your children will be improving their reading skills over the summer. Go get a library card and enjoy the adventures books can bring.

Backyard Camping

Camping in the backyard is easy and enjoyable. Children love the idea that they will be going camping even if it is in the backyard. Set up a tent, make a campfire, roast marshmallows, and tell ghost stories. This will be a night your children will never forget.

Transform a Walk into an Adventure

During a walk discover the types of plants and animals that are native to your neighborhood. Do some research beforehand and learn about the insects, plants, animals, etc. that live in your area. Then teach your children about what you found before you leave on your walk. They will be so excited to find examples of what they learned about that a walk will become an adventure.

Children’s Museums

There are many museums around that have been built just for children. These are great places for children to learn and discover while also experiencing something new.

The Beauty of Arts

Some of the best projects for children are art projects. These can be little canvases that they can paint on, or a play that they perform for the family. Let them be creative with their project and watch them as they bring something to life.

These are some ideas to help children forget about boredom and enjoy the summer. You will be able to spark the excitement of summer again.

Buyer Relax Auto: A Member's Experience

Casey Paint

Learning how to get a good deal when buying a new or used car can require a lot of time and stress… but it doesn’t have to. Just ask UCCU member Casey Stevens.

“When I was ready to look for a car, I spent hours and hours doing research online,” said Casey. “By the time I went to the dealership, I still had a lot of questions, but I was just hoping I could drive away with the car I wanted at a fair price.”

Unfortunately, Casey walked out of the dealership without a car and even more questions.

“The dealership put together a financing deal for me,” he said, “but it felt wrong. I wasn’t sure why, but I knew I didn’t want to make a bad decision, so I left.”

Casey walked out of the dealership, across the street, and into his local UCCU branch. That’s when he met Amber, a UCCU Auto Buying Expert.

“Amber was awesome,” he said. “While she was answering my questions, she asked if I had heard of Buyer Relax.”

Buyer Relax is a free service from UCCU that can turn anyone into an auto-buying expert. When visiting UCCURelax.com, shoppers will find “10 Essential Car-Buying Tips” that can help them get the best deal on any vehicle. They can also check current rates and get pre-approved, right online, for the guaranteed lowest rate. There’s even “Buyer Relax Experts,” for anyone who needs (or would just prefer) to speak with a human being.

“It was so helpful,” he said. “Buyer Relax puts all of this positive and helpful information right in front of you, in a way that’s really easy to understand. It not only confirmed everything I had learned from hours of painstaking research, it even taught me a few important things I hadn’t been able to learn on my own.”

Before long, Casey had the car he wanted, a 2011 Mazda 3 Sport, along with a low rate on an auto loan from UCCU.

“I’m very happy with my car, “ Casey said. “I only wished I would have known about Buyer Relax sooner. It could have saved me a lot of time!”

Buyer Relax is available to everyone at UCCURelax.com.

How to Save Money One Dollar at a Time

Gallery  Comment

blogimage_MoneyInHand

Most of us give in to temptation from time to time. Whether its buying on impulse, choosing name brands rather than generic, taking a taxi instead of a bus, or splurging on an expensive meal, indulging is fun and even healthy in moderation.

But watch out. Not enough attention paid to the small purchases will result in big money lost. The path to savings (for things that you really do want) is paved with pennies. It starts with awareness. Each time you make a purchase, consider the cost. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Brown bag your lunch. $7 per day totals $140 a month.
  • Substitute water for juice. A family of four can save over $500 a year by cutting just one glass of juice per person per day.
  • “Health” bars run about $2 apiece, and are often no more than glorified candy bars. Switch to a banana and whole-wheat bagel for half the price.
  • Use coupons at grocery stores and buy house brands instead of name brands whenever possible.
  • Prepare meals in advance and freeze them to avoid the temptation of ordering pizza at the end of a long workday. Cooking at home will make your food budget go much further.
  • Throw pocket change in a jar and cash it in when it’s full
  • Review your phone bill and drop unnecessary services like unlimited data.
  • Cut your cable television down to basic.
  • Hand wash instead of dry cleaning.

Chances are you can spot – then stop – these spending habits simply by paying closer attention to everyday expenses.

The Best Things to Buy This Summer

Gallery  Comment

blogimage_shopping

Believe it or not, having a plan in place for buying items you need at the right time can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year. Here’s a look at items best bought during summer:

Fruits and vegetables – These are going to be cheaper in-season, so stock up now and put the leftovers in the freezer.

Gym memberships – Membership tends to wane as people head outside to get their exercise, so be on the lookout for summer sign-up deals gyms provide to combat that.

Paint – If you’ve stood on top of a ladder on a 95 degree day in July to put a fresh layer on a house, you’ll know why most people wait until fall to do painting jobs. Retailers know this too, so they try to entice people to buy paint during their slow summer period.

Suits – Menswear tends to be another heat-sensitive consumer area, since few guys are looking to throw on the vest and sports jacket to head out to the baseball game.

Tools – Father’s Day is a great time to get dad that new drill since many sales at this time try to appeal to the old man’s fix-it sensiblities.

Grills – Barbecuing on the Fourth of July has become a national tradition, but once the holiday is over, retailers begin to drastically reduce the pricetags on grills.

Furniture – A lot of new furniture comes out in August, so starting in July you will see a lot of sales aimed at creating space for the new models.

Swimming gear – In August, stores are trying to sell swimsuits, pool toys and other water and beach-related goods like they’re going out of style because, well….

Computers – By planning your purchase in the late summer, you can cash in on a savings double whammy. Not only can you capitalize on back-to-school sales, but if you are willing to go with a model that is a few months older than the new shelf candy, you can get some ridiculous bargains.

Outdoor gear – Camping equipment, patio gear, swing sets and playhouses eat up floor space like nobody’s business, and retailers know that if they have a fall season overloaded with these items, they may get just that.

Linens – With thousands of students going off to college and needing to provide their own bedding for the first time, there is a tremendous amount of competition to supply it. Heavy competition = great deals for you.

In addition to keeping an eye out for these particular items, also find out if your state (or a nearby state) has a tax-free weekend. Many of these weekends occur in August, so you could really score big if you can buy an item you need on-sale and without taxes during this time.
